Chicago or Rio to get Olympics 2016 vote?

Betting Press Staff - 28 Sep 2009

Chicago and Rio de Janeiro head the betting over which city will this week be chosen to host the 2016 Olympics and British bookmakers are at odds over who they want to get the vote.

William Hill are hoping the Games go to Brazil after reporting 60 per cent of all bets they have taken on this market have been for the Windy City in America.

They make Chicago 4/5 to be selected, with Rio 2/1 after attracting just 15 per cent of these wagers, Tokyo (20 per cent) 6/1 and Madrid (5 per cent) the 10/1 outsider.

"If the bets placed with us are anything to go by, the Windy City will breeze their way to winning the Olympic bid," said Hills spokesman Graham Sharpe.

"Chicago is the result we fear, we'll be delighted if Rio gets the nod to take the games to South America."

However, Ladbrokes report they will take a battering if Rio is named as the host city on Friday after almost all of the late money with them has been for that venue.

"Rio is the only city punters want to back," said spokesman Robin Hutchison. "If it carries on like this we'll be changing next summer's holiday plans from the Copacabana to Skegness."

They have cut Rio in to 6/4 to get the nod, with Chicago still a shade of odds-on at 10/11, Tokyo 6/1 and Madrid 16/1.
