Ruby Walsh worries about Kauto Star in the Cheltenham Gold Cup

Ruby Walsh has admitted that he is “not overly confident” that he has made the right decision to ride 5/4 favourite Kauto Star in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, as he feels his mount and Denman are very evenly matched.

The 30-year-old has ridden Kauto Star to Gold Cup victory on two occasions, in 2007 and 2009, and goes in search of a hat-trick next month.

Tony McCoy is likely to be Walsh’s main rival for the Festival’s top prize, with the champion jockey on board 2008 winner Denman (2/1 to win the Gold Cup at Betfred) – who is in action this weekend in the AON chase at Newbury.

Speaking exclusively on Betfred Talk, Walsh revealed: “I’ve had to make a decision and it’s very hard to desert Kauto. It’s only my choice and I’ve got it wrong in the past so I wouldn’t be overly confident I’ve got it right this time either.”

The Irishman described the pair as “two exceptional horses” and feels there is only a “good jump between them”, as punters look forward to arguably the most eagerly awaited National Hunt contest.
