Button now odds-on for Sports Personality award

Betting Press Staff - 19 Oct 2009

Stirling Moss did it, Jackie Stewart did it and both Nigel Mansell and Damon Hill did it twice, so it's no wonder bookmakers expect Jenson Button to follow in their footsteps.

The equation is simple - if you win the Formula One drivers' championship, past form dictates you should also land the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

And with grand prix racing having returned to the nation's No 1 channel this year, Button will surely take some beating in this winter's big vote after wrapping up the title at the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Admittedly, the Brawn star may have limped over the line and memories of his early-season dominance have been slightly tainted by a struggle for points in the second half of the season.

Nevertheless, Button has been cut to 8/15 with bet365 to add the BBC gong to his six grand prix victories and title triumph.

“Fortunately we’ve been on the right side of Button for the Sports Personality of the Year award, swerving all the fancy prices on offer," said bet365 spokesman Steve Freeth.

"But nowhere near as lucky with our liabilities on him landing the F1 title, with punters smashing into him at 100/1, and all rates down, when Brawn impressed in pre-season testing.”

World Championships heptathlon winner Jessica Ennis is rated the only real danger to Button at 7/2 in this market, with England cricket captain Andrew Strauss 16/1 after this year's Ashes success.
