Australian Open final 2010 – Roger Federer wins

Betting Press Staff - 1 Feb 2010

Roger Federer admitted that the third set tiebreak of his Australian Open final win was an emotional rollercoaster.

It turned into a 24 point epic with Murray missing multiple set points. Federer also squandered a couple of chances to seal the match and after a memorable point in which Murray chased down a drop shot and flicked it right onto the baseline to keep the match alive, Federer admitted he wondered if it could be a turning point.

"Before I made the drop shot and I thought I'd won and might have been much more emotional, but then after losing that point, I'm thinking 'my God he just grabbed the trophy out of my hands. I might end up losing this thing',” he said.

"But then two or three points later, I'm the winner after all. It was very much a rollercoaster with the emotions."

Federer’s win maintains the possibility of a calendar grand slam for the Swiss, something no male player has achieved since Rod Laver. Federer currently holds three of the four grand slam titles and given his record at Wimbledon and the US Open, if he wins a second Roland Garros title it is a very real possibility.

However Federer insists he has not even thought about it. "That's not something I've ever put in my mind, that this is something I want to achieve," he said. "I'll still go and play the smaller tournaments, the Masters 1000s, the ones we're supposed to play. I try to give my best everywhere I go to because I think there's not only the Grand Slams.”

"Of course they are important, but I try to respect every tournament that invites me to go play there. I won't just put the entire calendar just around trying to win the calendar Grand Slam.”
