The 25-year-old went one better than silver medal winners Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah and Hannah England to claim victory in 48.26 seconds.

The Welsh athlete passed Puerto Rico’s Javier Culson in the final 20 metres before spreading his arms in celebration as he crossed the line.

Greene held his nerves after all the athletes were called back to their blocks after a faulty start and then told to stand up again before the race got under way.

Culson went out hard over the first 200m, but Greene always looked comfortable and, coming round the final bend in third, picked off South Africa’s LJ van Zyl before reeling in the Puerto Rican.

Greene, who had looked a picture of concentration and confidence before the race, has now won the World, European and Commonwealth titles. Culson took the silver in 48.44secs with Van Zyl getting bronze in 48.80.

“I have just been working so hard for this for many years,” Greene told the BBC. “I’ve had my lows but I always believed I could make it. I am just so pleased. I don’t think it has sunk in yet to be honest.”

He added: “I was a little bit disappointed that I was off the pace going into the last hurdle. When I got ahead I thought ‘I’m not letting this go now’.

“I do get a little bit nervous but I handle it better than some. Two faulty starts at the beginning didn’t really help but I am quite good at dealing with the pressure.”

England earlier produced a storming finish to win World Championship silver in the 1,500m. Competing at her first global championships, the 24-year-old Oxford athlete chased home surprise winner Jenny Barringer-Simpson, of the USA.
