MLB American League Preview: It's Yankees v Sox, again

The 2010 baseball season gets underway on Sunday April 4. Nick Shiambouros looks at the teams of the American League

New York Yankees (current World Series odds - 4.7)
The Yankees won the World Series last year in convincing fashion beating the Philadelphia Phillies in six games to record their 27th championship. This team is fundamentally the same as last year. The only notable signing was outfielder Curtis Granderson from Detroit. The Yankees have some outstanding pitchers in CC Sabathia and A.J.Burnett, arguably the two best in baseball. The Yankees are the team to beat again this year but they represent poor value.

Boston Red Sox (8.0)
Nothing short of a World Series will do for the Sox this year. Boston signed John Lackey as a free agent during the winter. He is a pitcher of the highest calibre and is a welcome addition to the rotation. This team has tremendous depth and a wealth of talent. Boston are legitimate contenders for the World Series and I am expecting a big year from them. They do not need motivation as their arch rivals New York won the World Series last year.

Los Angeles Angels (18.5)
This team suffered a tragic loss last year when pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed by a drunk driver. During the winter star pitcher John Lackey went to Boston as a free agent and they will struggle in the pitching department this year. But they can score runs - right fielder Bobby Abreu and first baseman Kendry Morales will provide plenty of firepower this year.

Tampa Bay Rays (19.0)
The Rays had another solid year last season but did not make the playoffs. Unfortunately for Tampa they are in the AL East with Boston and New York and did not make many changes to the team this year due to financial constraints. I think Tampa has an outside chance of making the playoffs but they need a quick start. It is not easy chasing the Yankees and the Sox all season long.

Minnesota Twins (34.0)
The Twins made the playoffs last year but were swept by the Yankees in the opening round. Minnesota spent a jaw dropping $184m to keep Joe Mauer for another eight years. Mauer averaged .365 hitting last year to win the batting title. I think this team has a real chance of making the playoffs, though their World Series odds are fairly priced. An outsider.

Detroit Tigers (40.0)
The Tigers came agonisingly close to making the playoffs last year, losing a one-game tiebreaker to the Twins 6-5 in an epic game. This year things could be difficult for this team. They lost Curtis Granderson to the Yankees over the winter and he is a hard man to replace.

Seattle Mariners (25.0)
The Mariners showed some signs of life last year and have made a couple of shrewd moves over the winter. Cy Young award winner Cliff Lee was signed from Philadelphia along with Milton Bradley. This team could surprise a few people and are lively outsiders.

Chicago White Sox (40.0)
The Sox could be in line for a good year. They have a solid pitching rotation that includes Jake Peavy and Mark Buerhrle.Gordon Beckham is a young player to look out for along with Mark Teahan. This is a generous price for this talented team.

Texas Rangers (34.0)
This team has some talent that includes left fielder Josh Hamilton. This guy can really swing the bat but is prone to injury. I think the Rangers could have a good year but their price is way too short for me.

Oakland Athletics (75.0)
Pitcher Ben Sheets was signed over the winter to bolster the rotation. This team has a huge problem in the hitting department and will struggle to score runs.

Cleveland (120.0), Toronto (110.0), Kansas (150.0), Baltimore (170.0) - These four teams have little or no chance of success
