Eastenders fans are set to find out on Friday night who killed former Queen Vic landlord Archie Mitchell on Christmas Day and punters believe Sean Slater is the most likely suspect.

The bad boy soldier, described by actor Robert Kazinsky as a "raging psycopath" has been backed in from 5/1 to 13/8 favourite with William Hill (free £25) bet to be unmasked as the murderer.

Sean's sister Stacey, who is pregnant with Archie's baby, and Ben Mitchell were originally at the head of the betting on 7/2 but they have drifted out to 13/2 and 6/1 respectively.

Ryan Malloy is the other big forward mover in the betting, having been supported in from 20/1 to 5/1 second favourite to be revealed as the culprit.

EastEnders executive producer Diederick Santer told the soap's official website: "There are three big clues - one from the Christmas Day episode, one more recently and another one that, if I told you where it happened, would give it away too easily.

"There have also been a few red herrings but the outcome is, I think, surprising and yet, like all good surprises, will be in retrospect inevitable.

"I think it's a good outcome, I know it makes sense and I don't think it will be one of those where the audience go 'huh?' - I think it will be satisfying, most importantly.

"We're doing the live episode to keep the secret safe for as long as possible - even the cast and crew won't find out who did it until on the night, during the episode.

"The script has gone out but there is a scene missing and on the night I'll tell the actors involved we're going with version D, or version F or version Z - but I'll hold that back for as long as possible."
