Here are today's Ladbrokes Sedgefield tips
Southerness has the form to take some beating here but he took a hefty fall when last seen and his confidence may have been affected, so we'll side with FRED BOJANGALS.
Anne Hamilton's gelding improved over fences throughout last season and is rated 125 in that sphere, a figure that should give him excellent claims providing he's fit for action after a break now returned to hurdles. There are dangers aplenty in a competitive opener, perhaps none more so than Bucephalus despite his double penalty. He did well to beat an in-form Irish raider at Perth and won't be inconvenienced by the drop in distance so looks set to rate the benchmark from which to judge the form. Ashammar was outclassed when last seen but must be included in calculations on the basis of his fourth behind Bellvano while Rain Stops Play has a bit to find and may need rain.
SHOPFRONTSPECIALST gets the vote to make a winning debut over fences ahead of Greenbelt and Teenage Idol.
Gordon Elliott's record at this track isn't particularly special but with AP booked it appears he means business and his 122-rated hurdler looks to have a fitness advantage over most of his rivals. Providing he's fluent over his obstacles Shopfrontspecialst can beat Greenbelt, who is winless in six tries over fences and hasn't won after an absence such as the one he faces here. That said with a rating of 118 he's entitled to take home some prize money and may fare better than Teenage Idol, who has claims on his hurdles mark but looks to need soft ground to produce his best. Darksideofthemoon has his conditions but just looks short of the required ability unless improving for the switch to fences so a bigger threat may be Lord Larsson who has won fresh.
Both of Cailin Na Ri's wins have come here and this tough mare isn't ruled out despite a penalty, whereas Russian War is confidently opposed with his welter burden despite connections.
The vote however goes to CLARACH who will be having her first start for Tim Vaughan. The trainer's records with other yard's cast-offs is well documented and in our selection he looks to have inherited a mare capable of winning races. When last seen she was set far too much to do at Tramore and with the prospect of improvement to come she's taken to make the most of the weight received. Bumper winner Ceasar's Return was travelling well in a similar race prior to falling when last seen and a market check is needed to assess his chance while BHA ratings point towards the chance of Lady Jinks but she was pulled up after an early mistake at Hereford and has something to prove.
JEU DE ROSEAU has been doing well on the Flat since last seen and with no question marks about his health gets the vote.
Chris Grant's horse is 3lbs higher than when last seen over timber but he ran a fine race to take second that day and remains unexposed at this distance. Denis O'Regan knows the horse well and providing rain stays away he's taken to beat the likes of Lady Wright and Roman History. The last-mentioned pair met here a month ago with Roman History coming out on top but he's since run just an average race on the level and a 5lb turnaround in the weights can help reverse that line of form. Heart Of Dubai ran okay in the cheek-pieces at Redcar without seemingly finding improvement but he's unexposed and needs a market check on his handicap debut while the likes of Osolomio and Goldan Jess aren't easily ignored.
Amalfi Coast made a satisfactory debut for the yard when second at Cartmel but this 11-year-old needs to improve on all known form to defy a mark of 108, so he's opposed in favour of REBEL HUNTER.
A P McCoy takes the ride aboard this former point-to-point winner who was always likely to better his hurdles efforts once switched to the larger obstacles. That certainly seemed to be the case with his second to a more experienced rival at Stratford and it's unlikely that we've seen the best of him, so this mark of 101 can be defied. Ballabrook comes into this on his second to The Snail off 2lbs lower but he's been absent for some time and is taken on along with The Thirsty Bricky, who remains unexposed in the context of this race but has questions to answer on good ground, with his form coming under markedly slower conditions.
Troodos Jet is considered for a rider who has a profitable record for the yard but despite a liking for this venue he's yet to win races back-to-back and looks worth taking on with STOLEN LIGHT.
Brian Hughes retains the ride aboard this nine-year-old who was last seen winning over further here. He's 7lbs higher now and drops back in trip but providing positive tactics are once again adopted he could prove hard to pass if jumping well. Tranos remains a maiden over fences and rather plugged on at Cartmel having looked beaten so this shorter trip is likely to prove an insufficient test so the mare Penny Queen may prove best of the rest. She's unexposed and tried in cheek-pieces ahead of her debut over the larger obstacles and has been found a winnable introduction as a few of these arrive out of sorts.
If CHESTNUT BEN can repeat the form he showed at Newton Abbot then this race may be his for the taking.
Connections were called in front of the stewards after he'd scored from 25lbs out of the weights that day and reported that he'd improved for a knee operation and a lengthy break, so there's reason to hope he's simply a different proposition now. If that's the case he should be winning now racing off his correct mark and we're prepared to take the chance. Should he blow out then Desert Soul could take advantage. He arrives with a consistent profile, goes well here and has the assistance of a talented rider in the saddle. Miss Molly Be Rude could do better returned to hurdles with blinkers applied while Murphys Appeal represents powerful connections and should be up to running well off her lowly rating in what is a poor contest.
